The compressor scans the PDF for embedded JPEG images (the DCTDecode filter), redraws each one at a reduced size and quality, and swaps it back into the document. Fonts, vector graphics, and any PNG images embedded in the PDF are left exactly as they are.

Three presets trade size for image quality
Low keeps quality high (85%) at full resolution. Medium drops to 70% quality at 75% of the original resolution. High goes to 50% quality at half resolution — the smallest files, with the most visible loss of image sharpness.

If the recompressed version would end up larger than the original — which can happen with PDFs that are already tightly optimized — the tool keeps the original file instead.
