Step 1: cancel matching letters
Both names are lowercased and stripped of spaces and punctuation. Then every letter the two names have in common is crossed out, one matching pair at a time — exactly like crossing out letters by hand on paper.

Step 2: count what's left
Add up the letters remaining in both names after cancellation. This total is the number you'll count with in the next step.

Step 3: eliminate around F-L-A-M-E-S
Starting from F, count around the letters F-L-A-M-E-S using your remaining-letter total, crossing out whichever letter you land on. Keep counting around the shrinking set of letters until only one is left — that's your result.

alex vs sam share one letter ("a"), which cancels from both, leaving "lex" (3 letters) and "sm" (2 letters) — 5 letters total. Counting around F-L-A-M-E-S five times, eliminating as you go, leaves F — Friends.
